Corrosion Coupon Removal and Replacement

Step 1) Caution: Care should be taken when installing and removing corrosion coupons. The coupon holder assembly is under pressure. Isolate the corrosion coupon from the fire sprinkler system by closing the ball valve located on above the corrosion coupon plug. An example of a typical corrosion coupon installation is pictured to the right. The brown envelope that was supplied with the original coupon is normally attached to the pipe assembly that houses the coupon.

Step 2) Slowly begin to unthread the corrosion coupon from the corrosion coupon holder. Remove the plug slowly to alleviate any remaining pressure.

Step 3) Once the corrosion coupon plug with coupon is removed from system. Place old coupon in the coupon envelope. Unscrew the small nut and bolt from coupon holder and place the corrosion coupon in the coupon envelope. Please write the date, customer name, and location where the coupon was removed on the corrosion coupon envelope.

Step 4) Before you install the new coupon in the holder, obtain a sample of the water from the coupon holder location for testing. Warning fire sprinkler system is under pressure. Slowly open the ball valve until a small stream of water begins to flow. Flush the water sample bottle 3 times to rinse the dried sterilant from the sample bottle. Fill the bottle to the top and tightly secure the cap on the sample bottle. Place the sample bottle and corrosion coupon in the plastic bag with the old coupon. NOTE: Be sure to add the date of removal on envelope with old coupon.

Step 5) Open the new coupon envelope with new coupon.

Do not touch the coupon with your fingers.
Use coupon envelope to hold coupon and screw the coupon with nut and bolt back onto the coupon holder. Note: Add location name and date coupon installed on the outside of the envelope.

Step 6) Please reinstall the coupon holder back into coupon installation point.
Once installed slowly open ball valve to allow water and system pressure to flow and fill the coupon holder with sprinkler water.
